MIDI or Musical instrument Digital Interface is a protocol used for the interchange of musical information between synthesizers, musical instruments and computers. The first MIDI version was released in 1981 and has been extensively used.
Unlike a tape recorder, MIDI does not record digitized sound waves but encodes the keyboard functions including the start of a note, length, pitch and volume. MIDI is actually musical notation. This means that when it comes to memory space, a MIDI can occupy a small space. Today, MIDI is used as music background particularly in multi-media applications mainly due to its concise format.
Aside from this, MIDI opened numerous possibilities especially for musicians. The term “virtual band” emerged because MIDI made it possible for musicians to create music even if their co-band members are located in a different place by using their MIDI instruments and transmitting the over the internet.
Another application of the MIDI is for mobile phone ringtone. The advances in digital mobile phone technology have made it possible to convert your favorite song in MIDI format, hence the MIDI ringtones.
MIDI ringtones also take up very little space in your cell phone. Currently popular for personalizing your mobile phone, MIDI ringtones are available for download. Simply select your favorite song and your carrier.
